Document Properties: Messages

The Messages properties page allows you to specify textual messages for aspects of the document that are not part of the document content itself. Some example messages include messages that provide information about the document such as the author and publisher or messages that provide additional information to the reader of a document when the reader enters an invalid registration code for a document that requires a registration code.

Adding or Modifying Message Text

By default, the text for all message fields is empty. To add or modify the text for a message field, double-click its entry to get the Edit Message dialog. In the dialog, enter or modify the message in the Text field. Messages can have line breaks as well. Click OK to accept the text for the message or click Cancel to leave the text as it was.

Note that each individual message may have a practical limit on how much of the text will actually display. The amount of actual space varies depending on the platform and device. By keeping a message relatively short, you can assure that all of the text in the message displays when shown.

Message Field Descriptions

The following subsections describe the available message fields. All messages require iSilo™ version 3.2 or later. The messages can be divided into the following major categories:

Document Information Messages

The document information messages include information specific to the document, its author, and its publisher. This information appears in the Document Information dialog, which is available when viewing a document. It consists of the following sets of messages:

Title Information Messages

The title information messages display in the Title section of iSilo™'s Document Information dialog.

Title

Use this field to provide the formal full title of the document. For documents with long titles, the Document Title field on the Destination property page does not provide enough space, allowing for only 31 characters, enough for a concise title. In such cases, you can provide the formal full title of the document in the Title message field.

As an example, a document might have the concise title

An Authoritative Guide to the Universe

but have the much longer formal full title

An Authoritative Guide to the Universe: Galaxies, Solar Systems, and Planets

Version Use this field to provide a version description of the document. The text is free form, but some possible suggestions include:

Version 1.1

or

3.0 revision B

Copyright Use this field to display basic copyright information for the document. An example might be:

(C) 1999-2002 Acme Co.

Notes Use this field to provide any additional information. An example might be:

Do not distribute this document.

Author Information Messages

The author information messages display in the Author section of iSilo™'s Document Information dialog.

Author name Use this field to specify the name of the document's author. An example might be:

Author contact Use this field to provide contact information for the author. An example might be:

Author notes Use this field to provide additional notes from or about the author. An example might be:

Publisher Information Messages

The publisher information messages display in the Publisher section of iSilo™'s Document Information dialog.

Publisher name Use this field to specify the name of the document's publisher. An example might be:

Publisher notes Use this field to provide additional notes from or about the publisher. An example might be:

Document Security Messages

The document security messages consist of the following sets of messages: See Document Properties: Security for more information about document security.

Registration Code Messages

The registration code messages display when requesting the document registration code.

Registration code message Use this field to provide the message to display before prompting the user to enter the document registration code. One possible use is to notify the user about the protected status of the document.
Registration code failed Use this field to provide the message to display if the user enters an invalid document registration code. One possible use is to inform the user of how and where the user may obtain a registration code.
Registration code cancel Use this field to provide the message to display if the user cancels entering of the document registration code. One possible use is to inform the user of how and where the user may obtain a registration code.

Password Messages

The password messages display when requesting the document password.

Password message Use this field to provide the message to display before prompting the user to enter the document password. One possible use is to notify the user about the protected status of the document.
Password code failed Use this field to provide the message to display if the user enters an invalid document password. One possible use is to inform the user of how and where the user may obtain the password.
Password code cancel Use this field to provide the message to display if the user cancels entering of the document password. One possible use is to inform the user of how and where the user may obtain the password.

Document Expiration Message

Expiration message Use this field to provide the message to display when the user attempts to open a document that has expired. If the document is a publication with a renewable subscription, one possible use is to notify the user about how to renew the subscription.
